The Empty Nest Fills Up Again

Ten days ago, I helped my son move into his freshman dorm room at James Madison University. Seven days ago, he started classes, with a mixture of online and in-person classes. Five days ago, I drove down to bring him a new piano keyboard he needed for a music class. And yesterday, the university announcedContinue reading “The Empty Nest Fills Up Again”

Photo Friday: Settled In

As hard as it is for me to wrap my brain around it, my son began college this week. We rented a minivan, packed it up, and drove down to the university over the weekend to help him move in during his scheduled move-in time slot, noon to 3 pm Sunday. (His roommate was scheduledContinue reading “Photo Friday: Settled In”

Postcards From the World: A German Castle

I received this lovely postcard today from a German Postcrosser named Ulrike, who lives in Munich. It shows a striking image of Cadolzburg Castle, a medieval castle in the Bavarian district of F├╝rth. Documentation of the castle goes back as early as 1157; it was an important site for hundreds of years.

Photo Friday: Cottage by the Lake

One of the worst parts of the pandemic-induced lockdown is not being able to travel. Of course, there isn’t a hard-and-fast no-travel rule here, but we are encouraged to stay close to home. And besides, travel just doesn’t feel safe right now. But I am desperate to get away. That’s why I was thinking aboutContinue reading “Photo Friday: Cottage by the Lake”

Photo Friday: Father’s Day

In honor of Father’s Day this Sunday, here is a photo of my own dad, seen here with my son. This was taken three years ago in South Carolina. My husband, son, and I traveled there to visit my sister Sue, while my father and stepmother joined us from California. We were supposed to getContinue reading “Photo Friday: Father’s Day”

Friday Photo: Prairie Dog 2

Oops. When I scheduled this week’s Friday Photo, I hit the wrong date and it posted yesterday. Is Thursday the new Friday? With the pandemic shutdown in effect, sometimes it’s hard to tell. You can check out yesterday’s post if you’d like to see the photo I posted of this prairie dog’s cousin. And hereContinue reading “Friday Photo: Prairie Dog 2”

A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to Mother’s Day

The last few days have been trying — even more so than the coronavirus shutdown brand of trying we’ve been living with for the past two months — and I am so far behind on posting to this blog. Sunday was Mother’s Day. We’d planned to drive to Williamsburg to check on my mom. IContinue reading “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to Mother’s Day”

Photo Friday: World’s Largest Rocking Chair

Thanks to pandemic-related lockdowns, most of us are stuck at home and probably sitting a lot more than usual. And that puts me in mind of a chair. This is not just any chair. This Missouri landmark was the world’s largest rocking chair. The last time I took a road trip to a conference inContinue reading “Photo Friday: World’s Largest Rocking Chair”
