On Thursday, he took his final exam. Then we packed up some of the stuff in his dorm room and moved it to a storage unit we rented near campus. It was that, or rent a van this week and again in August, who cart his dorm stuff back and forth — and find aContinue reading “Sophomore Year: That’s a Wrap”

Friday Five: Last Call
Today I’m answering five questions for the Friday Five. These are all about something that was last. Who was the last person you called? The last person I called on the phone would be my mother. I planned to send her flowers for her birthday, but something in a group text made me think sheContinue reading “Friday Five: Last Call”
The End of Spring Break
Spring has only just sprung, but Spring Break is over. We just packed up the car to take the college student back to school. It’s been great having him home for a week, but it never seems like enough time. I know some students want to party at the beach for spring break. My sonContinue reading “The End of Spring Break”
Winter Weather Advisory
This afternoon it was 63 degrees out, here in Harrisonburg, with a gentle breeze. A few little white clouds embellished a clear blue sky. And a Winter Storm Advisory begins in about 10 hours, with ice and snow. The following night, the temperature dips to 7 degrees. So much for spring weather. Officials are advisingContinue reading “Winter Weather Advisory”
Proud Mom Moment
My son’s university just put out the list of academic honors for the fall 2021 semester, and my son is on it! I know he’s extremely intelligent, but I sometimes focus on my fears that he doesn’t study and practice as much as he should. It’s good to be reminded that he really is doingContinue reading “Proud Mom Moment”

Nina
I remember my son’s first piano lesson with Nina. He came home marveling at the difference it made when he tried a technique she had taught him. “Why didn’t anyone ever show me that before?” he asked. She was his piano teacher for the next five or six years, until he left for college. TheContinue reading “Nina”
JMU Orchestra Concert
My son’s recent orchestra concert has been posted on the music department’s YouTube page. This is the James Madison University Chamber Orchestra, performing on December 5. The students performed Bologne’s Symphony No. 2 in D Major, Haydn’s Symphony No. 82 in C Major, and selections from Handel’s Water Music. It was a great concert. TheContinue reading “JMU Orchestra Concert”
Getting His Kicks
Facebook today reminded me of several memories of past December 8s. Two of them were Tae Kwon Do-related. Nine years ago today, on December 8, 2012, my son, then 10, earned his Black Belt in TKD. (I had been taking classes at the same time, but I never got beyond Purple Belt.) There was alsoContinue reading “Getting His Kicks”
