For Throwback Thursday, I’m celebrating the wedding anniversary of my great-grandparents, which would have been this week. Francesco Petrini and Maria Timi were married on 6 May 1902 in Nocera Umbra, Perugia province, Umbria, Italy.
I recently got hold of their marriage certificate from the comune in Italy. It’s in Italian, and mostly handwritten, but I’ve been able to transcribe it and have come up with what I think is a pretty decent translation. This was a civil ceremony, performed at the town hall. But I’m thinking in Italy at the time, they would have also had a mass in the local church. Interestingly, at age 20, my great-grandmother was considered a minor and required her parents’ permission.
Their first child was born two years later. By that time, my great-grandfather had already emigrated to the United States. His wife and daughter joined him in 1905.
