Throwback Thursday: Playing Soldier

I am still working on scanning all of the old family photos my father and stepmother passed on to me this summer. This is one of my favorites.

This photo shows my father’s family, and was almost certainly taken in Pennsylvania, where they lived — most likely in 1944, judging from the apparent age of the baby, my Uncle Frank.

My dad, Bart, is the older boy. My grandfather enlisted in the U.S. Army in December 1943; I like to think this photograph could have been taken just before he was shipped overseas. My father seems to be wearing a child’s version of a military uniform. He must have thought it was exciting to play soldier during the war.
