Hummingbirds!

The hummingbirds have returned! Or different hummingbirds have. I haven’t decided yet. Last summer, a female hummingbird set up housekeeping in our yard. She laid two eggs, enjoyed the sugar water in our hummingbird feeders, and raised twin sons. I named the three Molly, Fred, and George, and we enjoyed watching them all summer.

This week, we’re seeing hummingbirds again. They have been spotted in the backyard several times in the past week, but I had not seen them until today. This afternoon I saw a male, its ruby throat now bright red (Fred and George’s red spots grew and intensified last summer as they matured). A little later, I saw what I believe was a female, but I didn’t get a close enough look to be certain. No photos yet, but I’m sure I’ll be able to take some soon.

Is it Molly, Fred, and George? Do hummingbirds migrate to the same spots each year? Stay tuned, as we try to figure it out.
