Hitting the Road

May 27 is National Road Trip Day! I did not know there was such a thing as National Road Trip Day. I will not celebrate by going on a road trip today, but I may work a bit on planning one.

We are hoping to take a cross-country road trip this summer to visit family in California. The details are still up in the air, but we are formulating a plan. My son (Map Boy) has taking it upon himself to map out possible routes. We haven’t settled yet on places to stop along the way, so his itinerary is a work in progress. We’re going to be choosing some national parks and other sites to visit, and may stop to see friends and relatives as well.

A lot of people think it’s crazy to drive all the way across the country, but I like road trips. Besides, we’ve looked up airfares, and they’re ridiculous. I checked into Amtrak as well, but sitting up in a seat for three days straight does not sound like fun, and booking two sleeper compartments runs into some serious money, but each only sleeps two, and there are three of us. Of course, driving isn’t cheap, either, especially with gas prices being what they are. And we’ll have to rent a car; our 17-year-old Prius is too small and too old for a trip of this scope.

Still, we are up for the adventure. My son wants to match my total of 50 states visited. He’s at 39 states now, and will be able to add a few more on this trip.

This is not our actual road trip, but a selection of cross-country routes from RoadTripUSA.com.
