Nine years ago, on June 1, 2012, my group’s trip to Tuscany was over, but my own adventure continued.
With a few of my friends, I took a train from Florence to Rome, but we went our separate ways as soon as we arrived, and I was on my own for the rest of my time in Italy.
After checking into my hotel, I spent afternoon wandering the streets of the Eternal City and touring the Castel Sant’Angelo, which was originally built as a mausoleum for Emperor Hadrian and his family and later used by the popes as a fortress and residence. That evening I took another stroll, and watched a socialist rally on the Piazza della Rotonda, just outside the Pantheon, before stepping inside to see this amazing piece of ancient architecture by night.
