May 31, 2012, was the seventh day of our trip to Tuscany, and the first full day at our new hotel in the town of San Giuliano Terme. We had most of the day free to do what we wanted, and I spent the morning hiking up the hill behind our hotel to the ruin of a Roman temple at the top. The hotel actually owned the property, and it felt like such an Italian thing to be able to hike alone to a 2,000-year-old ruin, with no guardrails, ticket takers, safety fences, or fees. I had the hillside, the ruin, and the spectacular view of Pisa in the distance entirely to myself. Then I spent hours wandering the picturesque town, and climbing another hill for more astounding views.
Again, it was hard to choose just one photo of a day filled with so many gorgeous sights, but one thing that sticks out in my mind was the profusion of flowers everywhere in this lovely town. So I’ve decided to go with this characteristic view.
