In the nearly 12 years that I’ve been a member of Postcrossing, I have sent out more than 5,200 postcards to other members around the world, and have received about the same number. But while I often post images of Postcrossing cards I’ve received, but I’ve seldom displayed the cards I send.
The website provides me with a list of the most popular cards I’ve sent out. Popularity is determined by the number of Postcrossers who have marked a card as a “favorite.” I find it interesting that the most popular cards are not what most people think of when they imagine postcards. They are not the tourist-type cards that show breathtaking landscapes, important architecture, or key historical sites. Instead, they tend to capture images from popular culture or art.
The first card, the one that has received more “favorite” nods than any other of the 5,000+ cards I’ve sent, is a still shot from the Lord of the Rings films. In fact, Postcrossers seem to be big fans of LOTR; if I’d chosen to feature here the top ten most popular cards I’ve sent instead of the top five, you’d see that numbers eight and nine are also still shots from Lord of the Rings.
Of course, this list is subject to change, and often does. But the top three cards have remained consistent for some time.
